Today’s Parky Conversations podcast: Hallucinations in PD. So very weird…and fascinating.
We’re talking about hallucinating without the aid of substances. Yes, Jefferson Airplane, no LSD from your roommate’s stash required. We Parkies effortlessly produce our very own homegrown “shit”. all we need to do to “trip” is wake up in the middle of the night to pee. Or maybe not even that; sometimes the vague outlines of dogs, or children in Dickensian outfits appear out of nowhere when we’re wide awake.
Well, most of us would swap a visit with Timothy Leary himself for a “normal” brain any day of the week.
Anyway, join me please, on a wild journey through the minds of some modern-day “trippers” as we navigate our present-day visions, fueled only by the naturally- occurring mechanism that is Parkinson’s. Cue “Light My Fire” by The Doors, the all-purpose song from 1967, the purposes being sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll. And if you don’t get most of the cultural references here, find an older or younger cousin to explain them.
True story: I’ve often stated that one of my biggest regrets is not going to Woodstock. Yes, friends, I had the opportunity and I turned it down. Sigh.
If you want to know what it’s like to see insects in your underwear, listen up!
Recommendation
A gem of a documentary featuring some of the greatest music ever made, all in one place: Buffalo Springfield (a personal favorite); the Byrds; Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; the Mamas and the Papas, etc. Get out those headphones and whatever other “equipment” you might need to enhance the viewing and listening experience.
I strongly recommend reading Oliver Sacks’s book Hallucinations. He has a chapter on Parkinson’s but the whole book is fascinating and engaging. (As are all of Sacks’s books.)

Thanks Russell. I’ll definitely check it out. I believe I’ve read one of his books and plenty of things about him. This might be a good audio book.
